As we come to the end of 2024, many people look to set New Year's resolutions. As the popularity of running has skyrocketed the last few years, for many a goal has been to run a 10k, half marathon (21.1km) or even a full marathon!

If this is a goal you've been considering, some notable races in the first half of the year on the Vancouver running schedule are:

-'First half' half marathon: February 9th

-Vancouver Sun Run 10k: April 27th

-BMO Vancouver marathon, half marathon, and 8k: May 4th

-Vancouver half marathon: June 22nd

There are two key things to stay on top of to successfully prepare for a race: proper training and recovery!

When it comes to training, a structured plan can go a long way! Better yet, running with others is a great way to stay motivated and meet other runners. A few run stores on the north shore such as Forerunners, Kintec, and the Running Room offer structured run groups geared towards training for specific races! Other run groups such as Kinected Strength Run Club, North Shore run crew, Shaketown run club, and North and West Van run crews offer more casual and social run group meetups on weekends and weekday evenings!

Recovery can often be just as important as the actual training when it comes to preparing for a race. Our recommended guidelines for this (although it varies from person to person) would be:

-Massage: every three to four weeks

-Acupuncture: bimonthly to monthly

-Chiropractic: monthly, then weekly the month before the race

-Stretching/foam rolling/ yoga: Daily!
